Stupid Food Myths
It's lunchtime at work, and I'm scarfing down mini carrots from Trader Joe's... and i recall hearing (don't know where, maybe in my imagination) a myth that:
*If you eat too many carrots, your skin may start turning orange.
Sounds kind of like a joke told on Sesame Street. But couldn't it be true? Too much or some vitamin and this and that? Then it made me think of some other Food Myths I've heard growing up...
*Don't mix Cherries and Milk, because the mix of them in your stomach causes the formation of hard 'stone-like" substances in your stomach.
*Eating too many apples makes your teeth bigger.
Boy do these myths seem silly now, eh?
Couldn't find these myths on this site, but here are more 'normal sounding' Food Myths...
Feel free to share stupid food myths you've heard in your lifetime...

Hi Jen! I wondered this once too, about the carrots (never heard about those other weird myths). Here is the straight dope from cnn.com:
It can happen, but you would have to eat a lot, said Chris Rosenbloom, chair of the nutrition department at Georgia State University. In fact, you would probably have to start chugging carrot juice to get that orange glow. The phenomenon is called hypercarotenemia and the orange tint shows up mostly in the palms of the hands. Never fear, Rosenbloom said. This happens because the body does not use all of the beta-carotene from carrots and the resulting skin discoloration is harmless.
So if someone's self-tanning attempts go terribly wrong, blame it on your new Carrot Diet! :)
